Nice small laptop--quality questionnable August 31, 2010 Connoisseur (Los Angeles, CA United States) I was looking for an ultra portable laptop and while this one fits that description, there are drawbacks. Also, interesting that HP chose not to post my review on their Website probably because I've called out quality issues.
The netbook arrived with a warped keyboard. It's not an ergonomic keyboard but it rises on the right side and the keys aren't inlayed properly. I'm surprised this product got past their Quality organization! I like the laptop, it's small and addresses my need to access email and the Internet while traveling. It has a nice clear monitor.
Given the quality issue, I would recommend everyone purchase a warranty which I did.
I went online to register my Netbook's warranty when it arrived, but they claim I didn't.
Also, not great that while the keyboard arrived defective, they're asking me to pay for shipping charges to ship it to them to be repaired--despite the warranty I bought.
Get it together HP!
In the future, I would look at other brands. I'm not too impressed so far.
Great for my limited uses August 10, 2010 South of Boston (I bought the Windows XP mini with 1 gb memory) I had decades of composition books filling boxes so I decided to switch from handwriting my personal journal to typing. I'm a very fast touch typist. I, too, ran into the randomly jumping cursor problem, but I'm not fond of touchpads so I just got a wireless mouse and turned off the touchpad. The only catch is I can't plug in the mouse wireless USB adapter until after XP has booted or it hangs. No biggie.
I love the 11.6" screen and the quality of the display. I use the Microsoft Works word processor provided with the Rockwell font set to 14 pt. My eyes never tire. If there is a glare problem because I'm sitting by a sunny window, I just crank up the brightness.
My attitude adjustment and/or political activist time is spent at any cafe with wifi: reading online news; researching political, environmental, and health issues; using Facebook (the pics I've taken with the built in cam for my profile photo are great and I change them often), and writing. This HP has been more than adequate. And the only real wait I've experienced is booting up. I just sip my coffee and space out for a few minutes.
For those of you attached to handwriting (and I was, even had to have particular type of notebook and pen), there is a bit of a transition to typing (the hand-brain rhythm is different). But I love being able to spell check then save to a jump drive.
I haven't used it yet, but I am impressed with the HDMI port and built in SD, etc. card reader.
Beware. Most netbook sleeves are made for the 10" ones. I use a padded Case Logic bag that looks like a narrow messenger bag. One large pocket for the mini; another for the power adapter (I never charge at home), wireless mouse, etc.
Terrible, but terrible, computer August 7, 2010 Michael S. Arnold 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I can not even begin to express what a bad computer this is. I have had maybe a dozen computers over the past 25 years and this one is far and away the most inadequate machine I have ever had to deal with. I loaded it up with as much RAM as possible and it still is unbearably slow. Perhaps the processors they use in netbooks are simply not strong enough to run Windows 7 well, but it's inconceivable to me that it should take 30-60 seconds to switch between tabs in a Web browser or open a "reply" window to an email. Want to run a few programs simultaneously -- and I'm talking about standard programs like MSWord and iTunes? You better have hours to burn while the computer struggles to switch back and forth. Four months after plunking down good money for this machine I've already ordered a new netbook, going back to Toshiba and back to Windows XP. About the only good thing I can say about this computer is that the slightly larger screen is nice -- but if the screen is constantly frozen while the computer struggles to perform even simple tasks like email and Web browsing, what's the point? Ironically, I recently ran into the friend who originally recommended the HP Mini to me and it turns out she is also thoroughly disappointed with hers (although since hers is running XP, it's not quite as glacially slow as my Windows 7 version.) This was just a complete and total waste of money. I would strongly urge you to buy something else, anything else.
Bad computer. July 1, 2010 J COCCHIARELLA MD 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
In April 2010 I bought this minilaptop as a birthday gift for my daughter.
So far, she has been unable to use it.
It doesn't work.
She called HP support and was told it would need a new hard drive.
IT IS BRAND NEW!!!
Neither she nor I are very computer savvy so we don't know what to do.
She says it is junk!
I wish I hadn't bought it.
I can't recommend it!
Definitively the netbook to buy June 25, 2010 Jules I'm completely satisfied with this purchase. It is an excellent, beautiful netbook. The nvidia card is just amazing; I had never seen such an image quality before. This is definitively the netbook to buy.
