Failed gift August 13, 2010 J. J. Huang (Elkridge, MD USA) My wife is really into scrapbooking. So I thought I'd get her this as a gift. Total fail. On her first try with it, the material curled up in the machine and gummed up the works. As she tried to un-gum it, the bracket that holds the top roller broke - just the little piece that goes around the roller end. And Xyron does not sell replacement parts. Now the whole machine, along with all the cartridges I got her, are useless. All because they used cheap, brittle plastic in even the most likely places to break.
This was frustrating to use, didn't last long, and made an enjoyable activity un-enjoyable. Maybe I should search online for broken units to scavenge replacement parts.
Fun to use July 30, 2010 Love this; I can't find enough to make into stickers! Only negative is that I find it difficult to reload a previously partially used cartridge without wasting a lot of it. I might be moving up to the full-sized one when I can afford it.
Uniquely versatile niche tool March 5, 2010 Adrian D. Nedelcu 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As a professional artist, I was somewhat reluctant to buy this product for professional use. I have a Royal laminator, which serves me fine and has outlasted inferior laminators I've seen other artists use. I needed something that could create magnets and other promotional material on a small scale.
Totally met my expectations and then some. Granted, as many other reviewers have been mentioning, the supplies can get quite costly if misused. However, Xyron fills a niche where no other product remotely comes close. The machine is idiot proof, with clear guides and a cartridge based system that's similar to putting in an old nintendo or atari game. The cartridges are clearly labeled, to prevent you from destroying something which you wanted to be a sticker but is now a permanent decal, etc. There is a wide array of cartridges from permanent adhesive (suited to crafting and creating collages, even bumper stickers), repositional adhesive (ie: stickers), double laminate (haven't used this but it's for lamination obviously), and magnet/laminate (which actually DOES make working magnets).
The cartridges can be removed at any time when not in use and stored for later use. You can switch projects without burning the rest of your cartridge just to move on to something else.
I find this model is perfect for collectible stickers, business card magnets, magnet toys (like fridge words), collages, banners, and decals.
I would recommend an electric laminator like Royal for more durable, long lasting lamination. The Xyron is better tailored for all the rest, rather than strict lamination.
A Good Gadget October 4, 2009 Juanita A. Floyd (Leesburg, Virginia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this machine. I have all the Xyron makers for doing card making. My only gripe is that there is a waste factor of several inches on each run through the machine. If they could resolve that I wouldn't have an unkind thing to say.
Amazing tool for home-made anything... July 19, 2009 kdz (Gulfcoast) I love the simplicity and the versatility of this tool. No batteries, no power plug...just insert the type of cartridge (laminate, adhesive, moveable adhesive, magnetic) and you can make all kinds of things. I bought the tool to make menu cards and seating charts for my wedding...and it worked wonderfully. I've not been a crafty person in the past, but this makes me want to make all kinds of things - no more going to Office Depot or Kinko's to get things done...I can do it at home!
I found it a little difficult to know exactly where to cut my finished product. If you wait until it's clearly through, you end up wasting almost an inch on the item you just made AND the next thing you make. In trying to not waste, I ended up pushing through things one after the other and on more than one occasion I overlapped on accident. Once you screw it up, it's not exactly easy to undo.
I absolutely recommend it, though. Picture magnets will be my next Christmas gift thanks to this handy-dandy tool! :)
